Can a home battery start a well pump?

Usually the question is surge (locked-rotor amps), not kilowatt-hours. We do not have a pump dyno. We can only compare published inverter numbers to typical pump nameplates.

Ballpark nameplates (not your pump)

A ½ hp 240 V well pump often draws ~800–1,200 W running and several times that for a moment at start. A 1 hp pump is worse. Soft-start kits cut start current; they are a better spend than a random 2 kW “solar generator.”

What published numbers imply

  • Tesla Powerwall 3: 11.5 kW continuous and 185 LRA — one of the few LRA figures in writing. That is the honest installer answer for many ½–¾ hp pumps.
  • EcoFlow Ultra X: 12 kW continuous, manufacturer surge marketing up to 45 kW. Promising on paper; we have not logged a start.
  • BLUETTI EP900: 9 kW continuous. Serious running-watt headroom.
  • Anker F3800: 6 kW. May start some ½ hp pumps, especially with a soft start. Not a promise.
  • Delta Pro 3: 4 kW. Weak for many 240 V wells. Do not buy it for this job alone.

Read your pump’s LRA on the badge. If the seller cannot tell you LRA or surge, do not take their “runs a well pump” claim.
