How to use solar with a home backup battery
Solar does not replace a full charge from the wall before a forecast outage. It extends day two if the sky actually clears. Size the panel to the battery you own.
- Charge from the wall first Every system on this site can refill from AC. Do that 24–48 hours before a named storm. Solar is plan B after the weather passes.
- Read the host’s voltage window, not the panel’s marketing watts EcoFlow DELTA 3: 11–60 V, 500 W. DELTA 3 Plus: two 500 W ports. DELTA 3 Ultra Plus: up to 1,600 W PV. Anker C2000 Gen 2: 11–60 V, 800 W. F3000: 2,400 W dual input. F3800: 2,400 W. F3800 Plus: 3,200 W (11–165 V). AC200L: 1,200 W. Exceeding voltage is how ports die.
- Prefer the brand’s own folding panel the first time EcoFlow 400 W lists $549 / $649. Anker sells 400 W kits next to F-series units. Bluetti lists 200 W and 350 W bundles on the AC200L page. Third-party panels work only if you own the adapter and the math.
- Aim, keep it dry, and expect less than the sticker A 400 W folding panel in real weather is often a 1–2 kWh day — enough to offset a fridge, not a heat pump. IP ratings on the panel do not make the battery waterproof. Keep the station itself out of rain.
- Do not feed rooftop solar into a portable during an outage unless the maker says so Anker’s F3800 Plus FAQ says you cannot recharge from rooftop solar through the Home Power Panel during an outage — connect 11–165 V panels directly. Ultra X + SHP3 is a different, documented path.
