What a 2-day ice storm / Nor’easter outage actually needs

Ice and wet Nor’easters knock out suburban feeders for about two days more often than a week. The job is cold, often sunless for panels, and unforgiving on pipes, sumps, and medical loads. This is not another “best of 2026” list, not a hurricane week page, and not a portable-to-panel how-to.

A 2-day ice outage is enough to spoil a fridge, stop a CPAP night, freeze pipes if heat controls die, and flood a basement if the sump stops. It is not automatically a 40 kWh whole-home week. Size for the cold, short window — then expand only if your house actually needs it.

2. Must-run circuit list (before any brand kit)

Check only what you will keep. Everything else is shed. Do not buy inverter watts for a dryer you will not run.

Planning average for fridge + CPAP + router often lands around 0.25–0.40 kW if you are strict. Across two days that is roughly 12–20 kWh before inefficiency, door openings, a sump cycle, or a space heater. A single 3.84 kWh station is a night or two of essentials — not a silent whole house — unless you recharge. Run your watts on the runtime calculator. Tick boxes on the essentials checklist.

3. Voltage · surge · usable-kWh gates

Fail any gate and the product is the wrong class for that job, no matter the brand.

  • Voltage. Fridge, CPAP, router, many sumps: 120 V. Many wells and some dryers: 240 V. A 120 V-only box fails the well before Wh matters.
  • Surge / start. Locked-rotor amps on the pump badge beat marketing “runs a well.” Soft-start kits cut start current. Extra batteries do not buy start current.
  • Usable kWh. For ice, assume little or no solar for 48 hours. Usable energy ≈ nameplate × depth-of-discharge honesty × inverter efficiency — then divide by your average kW. Recharge from the wall before the storm, or from a generator if you already own one.

4. Shop-ready paths vs installer (dated 11 Sep 2026)

Shop-ready means you can order hardware without waiting on a Tesla or Powerwall quote. Automatic whole-home still means a panel kit and an electrician in most houses. No federal 25D subtraction on a homeowner-owned 2026 install.

5. Generator vs battery for ice

Battery favors ice when the critical list is fridge, medical, networking, furnace control, and maybe a sump — and you want silent indoor storage with no CO in a closed garage. Charge to 100% from the wall before the forecast icing. Do not plan on folding panels under gray ice cloud.

Generator risk rises on ice because fuel delivery and safe outdoor placement get harder when roads glaze. A dual-fuel plant still wins on multi-day Wh and some 240 V starts, but only if you already have fuel on site and a safe outdoor plan. Never run a generator indoors or in an attached garage.

Hybrid only if you already own the generator: battery for quiet nights and UPS-class medical loads; generator for recharge and the high-surge 240 V job. Do not buy both at whole-home scale before you have a written circuit list. Full fork: generator vs battery vs hybrid.

  • ~2 cold days, essentials only → expandable 120/240 V portable (F3800 / DP3 class) plus same-brand extras if Wh is short.
  • ~2 days + automatic circuits / more Wh → Ultra X class (± SHP3) or EP900 stack — confirm live carts.
